Newbold College is a College of Higher Education operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

About 300 students study on the campus situated amongst rolling fields and wooded meadows about 40 miles west of London in Binfield Village which lies about two miles  from two English towns, Bracknell and Wokingham.

The college is accredited by the Open University Validation Services, as well as the University of Wales Lampeter, United Kingdom, an extension campus of Andrews University, Michigan, United States, and Washington Adventist University, Maryland, United States.

 

The Newbold College Philosophy of Education

Newbold College stands for the view that God has not only created all life but all meaning and value. It therefore seeks to equip students to make crucial distinctions of value as they form the moral bases of their own lives. It wishes them to become thoughtful and discerning, not mere reflectors of intellectual fashion. It encourages its students and staff to foster their own creative gifts.

Newbold College wishes to extend to all the love and respect needed for growth towards personal wholeness. All members are encouraged to engage in the sometimes difficult task of integrating their faith with new learning. All are encouraged to embody this in their daily lives, and so not separate faith and practice. All are encouraged to find suitable ways of expressing their own commitment. The overriding goal is to create a healthy and resourceful Christian community.

Newbold College upholds the paradox that it is in serving others that we foster our own deepest and best interests. It seeks to provide an environment where all can develop a healthy rhythm of giving and taking in their lives. The College is founded on the conviction that, through the resurrection of Christ, we are offered, here and hereafter, the possibility of life with a radically different quality, and that life is most fully lived in the companionable presence of God’s good Spirit.

Aims

It is the aim of Newbold College to:

• deliver to its students an affordable educational experience of high quality.
• provide an approach to education which is in harmony with the best traditions of Seventh-day Adventist philosophy.
• provide educational opportunities in line with the needs and wishes of the College’s constituency.
• provide students with every opportunity for spiritual growth.
• empower students to accept responsibility, to be of service, and to bear witness.
• respect and to celebrate diversity in its many forms.
• integrate the College with the life of the wider community.

Spiritual values

Newbold College invites its students and staff to:

• be embarked on a journey on which they will catch a glimpse of God
• engage in a relationship with God, to know and be known by Him
• recognise the generosity of God even in dark times when He appears to be absent
• affirm their moral and spiritual obligations without allowing a sense of duty to overshadow their joy
• know themselves sinful but forgiven, wounded but healed, judged but welcomed
• recognise that while spiritual life is a personal matter it is not private, and that social obligations follow
• affirm God’s promise to come and make all things new.

Code of Ethics

The College exists primarily for its students who have a right to expect that all staff will be welcoming, and will maintain a high level of professionalism in the service they provide. All College activity focuses on the desire to make Jesus known and loved within and beyond the community but first and foremost by its students.

Newbold College trusts its employees to embody the principles of Jesus Christ in their everyday transactions. It stands for the view that all persons have equal value in the sight of God, and therefore they deserve to be treated justly, and accorded respect regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, age or disability. It wishes to celebrate the wisdom and the diverse forms of expression brought by staff and students alike from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

The College expects colleagues to recognise that it takes constant effort to maintain the good health of a community. It is thus vital for all to maintain loyalty to each other and to students, though this will not obscure the need for mutual accountability. Among other things this involves maintaining a high level of confidentiality when the situation demands.

The College recognises that communities prosper most when members are given room to be themselves. The College therefore encourages colleagues to have personal and professional interests beyond the demands of community life. At the same time, it is important to recognise that the College is an integral part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and that employment entails loyalty to it. Colleagues will often find themselves in situations where they will in effect be ambassadors for the College, and will have the duty to enhance its reputation.
